Kibera residents now want the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), to extend the ongoing voter registration exercise.
The purpose of this would be to help those who have not yet registered to have more time to do so.
Speaking at Raila village in Kibera, Thomas Mwaura, an area resident said that due to the low turnout from residents to register as voters in the ongoing voter registration, it would be a good idea for IEBC to consider extending the registration period.
“IEBC should extend the exercise like for another thirty days of registration in order to allow those who have not registered so far to register,” said Mwaura.
Another resident, Ann Magoma, who is also the head of the Nyumba Kumi plan in Raila village said that many youths who applied for IDs have not received them, therefore, IEBC should extend the exercise as it is expected that some youths whose IDs are being processed will be out in the next one week or so.
“Many people, especially from Kibera have not registered as voters due to unavoidable circumstances. If IEBC could consider extending the registration exercise, it would really be great,” said Ms Magoma.
Charles Jonjo, another resident said that many people are changing their polling stations. 30 days that were set for the registration exercise are not enough.
‘‘I urge IEBC to extend the duration of registration to meet the targeted number and if not so, very few people will be registered by March, 15 2016, when the exercise is expected to end.
