The Commission also directed the politicians to avoid their respective party mobilisation material, as the exercise is required to be non-partisan.

In a statement by the CEO Ezra Chiloba, the Commission noted that the contribution of the politicians in the exercise should be private and not attached to any political interests.

“In complementing our efforts to rally people to register, politicians should not use IEBC logo or political party mobilisation materials,” read the statement in part.

Most political leaders and those aspiring for elective positions in the 2017 election have been using the exercise to popularise their candidature, a move the commission faulted, saying such individuals are taking advantage of the exercise.

“Their (politician’s) efforts should remain non-partisan and they should never use the exercise as a campaign platform,” read the statement.

The Commission did not however, specify whether the move was illegal, or if any action will be taken against the politicians who have been contravening this directive.

According to the commission, a total 229,610 applications have been received from 26 counties for voter transfers.

The Commission however, indicated that the breakdown will be provided once all data is availed from all the counties, at a time when voter importation is also under investigation in various parts of the country.
