An official of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has said a negative attitude developed by a section of unregistered voters in Nakuru is to blame for the low turn out across the registration centres in the county.
David Towett, the commission's coordinator in Central Rift region which comprises Nakuru, Baringo,Laikipia and Samburu counties, said Thursday unfulfilled promises by elected leaders or graft allegations plays a bigger role in demoralising potential voters from registering because they feel they will be cheated and betrayed.
He added that there is need for the media to work hand in hand with the commission to ensure such attitudes are changed, so that the commission can realise its target of registering more voters in the area.
Towett in an interview with this writer, added that as much as they were mandated to register voters, they are, however, not empowered by the constitution to forcefully register voters, maintaining that a decision to register lies only with an individual.
A week ago, the commission launched the nationwide mass voter registration in a bid to register 18 million new voters ahead of the August 2017 general election.
The exercise, has however, been marred with low voter turnout across the country.
