Ann Wambui is the head teacher of Anwar Academy, a primary school situated in Kibera slum. To reach her school, one has to walk through narrow alleys far into the slum.
The school has a small compound but is full of creativity. Children’s drawings on the walls, colourful decorations around the yard indicating a space for and by children.
''You need to be creative to run a school in the slum because we have no money. The school should be a place for kids to be kids, where they can be safe and comfortable,'' said Ms. Wambui.
Ms. Wambui said that only 25% of the students parents are able to pay school fees but she says that alone cannot make her refuse to educate those who cannot afford to pay.
Another challenge the school faces is the lack of hygienic washrooms and sanitation.
''Previously, it was hard for us to secure a clean and safe school environment for the pupils. We had pit latrines but they were hard to keep clean and we had bad smell and flies everywhere. Our teachers had to spend their time on cleaning the pit latrines instead of teaching,'' she said.
Kibera is a tough place, but the compassion this woman has for the children leaves them full with a lot of love and gratitude.
