Residents of Itumbe Location in Sameta Sub-County have been warned against blocking drainage systems during the rainy season.

Speaking on Wednesday in his office, Itumbe Chief, Henry Mirera, cautioned residents against interfering with drainage systems and culverts along the roads, to avert flash floods which threaten safety of property and human life.

Mirera advised area residents to ensure all drainage systems are not blocked to allow rain water to flow freely without interference as part of the efforts to mitigate the effects of the El Nino rains.

"I am warning area residents against blocking drainage systems, especially trenches and culverts along roads to allow free flow of rain water, to avoid destruction caused by the floods during the rainy season," said Mirera.

Mirera said that floods which might arise as a result of clogged drainage systems will cause a lot of destruction not only to crops and other property, but also pose a threat to human life.

Mirera warned area residents against dismissing the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) warning regarding the El Nino rains, and urged them to heed the advise to take precautionary measures to avoid falling victim to the effects of the heavy rains.
