Kenya Forest Services (KFS) collects Sh3 million in revenue annually from visitors to the Menengai Crater.

Nakuru head of KFS Cosmas Ikiugu said that the cash goes into maintaining the area.

Speaking during a phone interview on Monday, Ikiugu said visitors who failed to obtain a receipt once they paid the cash are being involved in corrupt deals.

“They should demand a receipt as this is the only way to ensure that the cash that was issued is given to the services. If anyone has been entering without the official receipt, then there is a serious problem,” he added.

Ikugu pointed out that KFS had allowed the collection of the cash as a means to sustain themselves.

“We charge Sh600 on foreigners and locals Sh200 as access fee to the crater,” he added.

Ikiugu said that they did not charge residents who live in the Crater and they were allowed there for free.

His views come after residents raised concern over who the cash was benefiting.

“They do not even count people who are entering especially when you are in a group and you are never given a receipt which indicates that the cash is going to certain individuals,” said Peter Muchai.
