Twenty-three passengers were on Monday arrested along Kiambu Road in different matatus for failing to fasten their safety belts.
Kiambu Traffic Base Commander Gabriel Mulei said that the operation was conducted due to increased cases of commuters ignoring basic traffic rules.
He said safety belts were very much overlooked and in most matatus they were dirty after being stepped on severally since they are not put to use.
Mulei said that most passengers assume that every traffic offence is the mistake of matatu operators saying it is not necessarily the case.
"Some of those we arrested were even complaining that the matatu crew were the ones on the wrong for not telling them to fasten their belts. It shows how passengers are ignorant of their own safety to an extent that they expect operators to tell them to fasten their belts before departure," said Mulei.
He said that the operation will be ongoing to ensure passengers realise the importance of ensuring their safety every time they travel.
The 23 will be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
