A group of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in Kiandutu slums has appealed to the national government to resettle them before the 2017 General Elections.
Speaking at Thika Sub-County headquarters on Wednesday when they presented a petition to Thika West DCC's office, the IDPs' Chairman John Njuguna, said that poverty and misery had become the way of life among the more than 300 IDPs.
"It is sad that we continue to suffer in the slum yet we were evicted from our own pieces of land eight years ago. The government on the other hand has been hesitant to help us go back to our lands, resettle or even compensate us,” said Njuguna.
Njuguna who was accompanied by other five IDPs' officials said that they will not rest untill they get a substantial response from the government.
"They keep on taking us round in circles without offering a solution and now we are about to hold another general election. We do not want that election to find us still living in the slums. The government must listen to us and do something about our suffering,” added Njuguna.
