Kibera residents have been urged to distance themselves from heavy drinking in order to avoid the reckless behaviour that may lead to deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS.

Addressing a meeting today at the Kamukunji ground, the Kibera chief Boniface Kariuki said that heavy drinking causes one to indulge in activities that they would not under normal circumstances.

“I urge you to avoid the habit of drinking; many marriages have ended in divorce and other people have gotten diseases like HIV/AIDS or lost their jobs,” said Mr. Kariuki.

The residents have also been urged to report the bars that are being opened before the set time with regards to the Mututho law so that they can be dealt with.

Mr. Kariuki’s remarks come at a time when drinking among the youth is high despite the county government's crackdown mid this year aimed at curbing the menace.
