Pollution of the environment at Kibera slums in Nairobi county is made up of used polythene papers which residents and customers dispose off anywhere because there are no litter bins or rubbish pits.

According Nicodemus Kinywa, a trader at the Laini Saba market Kibera who was speaking this morning at his work place, the increased pollution is as a result of the everyday use of polythene bags and papers and throwing them recklessly once residents and customers buy commodities from the market.

“In many cases, people complain over the lack of a proper drainage system; it is not because this area lacks a proper drainage system, it is due to the polythene bags which block the drainage channels," said Nicodemus.

“I urge all residents within Kibera to take responsibility to ensure that the environment is clean. Let us throw wastes in one designated area where they can be easily collected or burned. This will help to curb the pollution menace in the area," argued George Omondi, a resident at Laini Saba village.

“Everybody should be vigilant to ensure the proper disposal of bags in the market or at our living premises which do not decompose thus polluting the environment where we live in. We should embrace the use of materials that do not pollute environment," advised Mama Miriam Mutua, a trader at Laini Saba market.
