Kiganjo Estate is set for a major facelift after the Kiambu government started to install street lights in the area.
The first phase which starts from BAT junction on Garissa Road to Kiganjo, Corner One matatu stage is expected to be completed in a few days time.
The street lights have also been installed on Garissa Road starting from Gatitu to Makongeni shopping centre.
According to Kamenu MCA Mary Hussein who spoke on the phone on Friday, the project is a wider move by the county government to extend street lighting beyond Thika town centre.
"Most of the estates in the outskirts of Thika town remain unlit despite their surging populations. This is why the county government has embarked on lighting project that will see most of these estates installed with street lights,” Hussein said.
The MCA added that the first phase is aimed at lighting the major roads in the estate before proceeding to other areas within. Residents have applauded the move. "We have stayed in the dark for long. This is good for us because even the security of this place will improve," Martha Wanjiru, a resident said on Friday.
Jorum Kimani, a businessman said that business in the estate will now improve.
"Most of us close our businesses as early as 9pm leaving only the bars for fear of attacks. But now once the lights are operational we can push a little bit longer," he said.
