Farmers along Athi River in Kilimambogo have decried alleged invasion of their farms by hippos and destruction of their crops at night.

The farmers, speaking to journalists on Thursday in the area, said that the hippos have now become a menace and now want the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) intervene.

"These hippos have turned to a liability for us residents because every time we have crops in the farms, the hippos have to invade and destroy them before they grow to maturity," said Simon Mwangi, a farmer.

They now say that they have resorted to guarding their farms at night to keep the animals away.

"We have no other option than spending the night in the farms to guard our crops against the hippos or else we will go hungry," Anastacia Njeri, another farmer said.

The farmers say that KWS must do everything possible to keep the animals off their farms or take the responsibility of compensating them for the losses they incur.

"KWS has the sole mandate over wild animals and must, therefore, take responsibility of compensating us whenever animals invade our territories," Patrick Kibe said.

Speaking separately at his office, Thika East DCC Solomon Komen indicated that his office was aware of the farmers' plight and that it was doing everything to help the farmers.

"We are trying to reach the Ol Donyo Sabuk KWS station to help us end the menace and we are hopeful that they will be here on time to save the farmers from incurring  further loss," Komen said.
