Chiefs and their assistants from Kisii County have been warned against abetting Female Genital Mutilation in their areas of jurisdiction.
The Anti-FGM Board chairperson, Linah Jebii Kilimo chiefs who condone the outlawed practice risk prosecution according to Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation Act,2011.
Speaking Friday at Daraja Mbili Market during the launch of the anti-FGM campaign in the area, Kilimo warned chiefs against hiding behind their community's culture to allow parents subject their girls to the 'cut' which is outlawed in the country.
The former Marakwet East MP challenged the Gusii community to give girls a break from outdated cultural practices which she regretted had no value in the 21st century.
"I understand members of the Gusii community as hardworking people, but the only unfortunate thing is they have allowed men to excel in the field of education which is a critical social pillar in the Vision 2030 blue print while girls and women continue clinging to FGM which deprives girls the right to education and favourable competition with boys," stated Kilimo.
She warned members of the community practising FGM that it will not be business as usual as the law will soon catch up with them and consequences will be costly in terms of jail terms and fines.
