The Kisii County government will partner with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol Drug Abuse (Nacada) to establish a treatment and a rehabilitation center for alcohol addicts.
In the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two parties, Nacada will offer Sh9.2 million while the county government will provide land for the project.
Nacada Chief Executive Officer Dr William Okedi and county secretary Johnstone Ndege signed the agreement on Monday.
The event was witnessed by Nacada regional manager Esther Okenye, Culture, Sports and Social Services CeC Marcella Otuke and county deputy attorney Kennedy Onsembe.
Dr Okedi said the authority is mandated to spearhead the establishment and expansion of rehabilitation centres for alcohol and drug addicts.
"We will ensure that this exercise is a success because it is our mandate," he said.
He said the agency was committed to coordinating efforts aimed at preventing, controlling and mitigating the menace of alcohol and drug abuse in the country.
He said the authority will facilitate regular consultations between the county and its key staff and will appoint the regional manager to be part of the project's team.
Ndege thanked Nacada for their support, saying it is a major project expected to treat and rehabilitate youths with substance use disorders from within the county and neighboring areas.
He appealed to the community to start identifying victims of drug abuse and warned youths against engaging in harmful activities.
