Kisii County government has been hailed for its efforts to combat possible flooding following the ongoing El Nino rains.
Governor James Ongwae recently launched an emergency team constituting of youths selected from all areas across the county whose main duty will be unblocking sewages and other water passage areas to avert incidents of people incurring losses due to heavy rains.
On Thursday, residents of Daraja Mbili lauded the recent action by the county government and reiterated their confidence that the team will help curb the danger posed by El Nino rains.
“We are happy as residents of Daraja Mbili because the region is vulnerable to flooding due to its low altitude. Unblocking those sewages by the youth is welcome and we thank the county leadership for such a wonderful project,” said Peter Kenani on behalf of area residents.
They said the move will also restore normalcy at Daraja Mbili market which is the largest in the South Nyanza region.
“Many people had started avoiding the market in the afternoon hours due to the havoc caused by heavy rains, but that will be a thing of the past now. We particularly want them to start with river Nyakomisaro which often bursts its banks,” he added.
They, however, urged the county government to deploy humanitarian aid in the region for the families who had been affected before the exercise.
“We are aware of some people who have been displaced from their homes along Nyakomisaro and we hope the county government will expedite deployment of humanitarian aid,” he said.
