Kisii University students have been urged to shun tribalism during campaigns and in their upcoming students' union elections.
The University's assistant Dean of Students Br Francis Kerongo told students on Wednesday to end tribal based campaigns but rather embrace democracy in choosing their leaders.
"Students ought to be independent when voting for the union leadership. If we open our eyes and choose good leaders then tribalism will end," he said.
According to him, students had divided themselves to vote for candidates from their own communities.
Josiah Odanga, a student contesting for a student's union post said, "the tribes will determine the students' union leadership. This tribalism is a reflection of what transpires in Kenyan national politics, it's unfortunate".
He claimed that some aspirants were contesting for self interests.
Vincent Moracha, a media lecturer said: "we are intellectuals and we are not supposed to make decisions based on our tribes. Students must be careful in choosing leaders lest they regret later on."
