The youth in Kisii were on Friday challenged to exploit new investment opportunities in the market if they are to advance economically.
Kisii County Education Board chairperson, Dr Henry Onderi, said the youth should take advantage on the loans they are securing from banks and the government to invest in real estate industry and other meaningful development initiatives.
‘‘Use the money wisely. Exploit the new fund avenues to invest in motor vehicle and really estates,” he advised.
Dr Onderi, who is also the director for Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Kisii campus was speaking during an annual general gathering of Kisii County Youth Development Forum that took place at sports club.
He urged the youth to join Saccos in order to access money to help them start up and expand their businesses.
Kisii County Youth Development Forum president, Dennis Orioki said escalating unemployment rates among the youth was a stark reminder that the youth should change tack and embrace entrepreneurship if they want to attain financial stamina.
He bewailed that borrowing of loans among the youth still remained poor and some of them relied of handouts from politicians to sustain themselves with.
“Our Sacco has more than Sh 23 million which we want to be utilised by our youth for business ventures if they want to be self-reliant,” he said.
He said more than 75 percent of the Sacco’s funds was in circulation among the members but urged for more in uptake.
He said members wanting to engage in small medium enterprises should move capitalize on the funding opportunities.
Orioki said they were funding construction of greenhouses, beehives and incubators in asset form for purposes of boosting agricultural business activities among the youth in county. More than three thousand youth from 45 wards attended the one day event in Kisii.
The Sacco chairperson, Hesborn Moronya said they will open up an additional branch in an effort to reach out to more members from the county.
