The Kisumu County government will embark on a cleaning exercise in all informal settlement areas from April.
The county director, Anthony Saisi said the exercise will incorporate youths from the affected regions.
The exercise will be conducted in Obunga, Kaloleni, Manyatta and Nyalenda slums.
"This exercise is meant to make our environment safe and conducive for everybody. We have noted that sanitary measures are poor in this area and, therefore, we need to return to our former glory,’’ said Saisi.
The cleaning will entail collection of solid waste, onsite solid waste management, transportation and safe disposal of solid waste to designated dump sites and creation of awareness on solid waste management.
He added that during the exercise, River Kisat in Kibos will also be rehabilitated to facilitate free flowing of water and removal of waste.
"We have outlined some measures to rehabilitate River Kisat. Removal of solid waste deposited to decongest the river, which is a way of opening drains for easy flow of water and removal of illegal sanitary facilities," said Saisi.
Saisi also stated that the creation of awareness to the chang’aa brewing enterprise community within the catchment area will also be part of the exercise.
The purpose of the exercise is to make the affected areas litter free as well as sensitise the community on waste management.
