The Kisumu international Airport is set to conduct a safety drill this year as a way of determining the preparedness of the facility in responding to an emergency.

The drill that will be conducted anytime this year will be used to test the airport's preparedness in case of a fire outbreak.

This was revealed by the airport's managing director James Okumu during the Kisumu County service delivery committee meeting.

Okumu said that the drill will only test on the fire break out preparedness and nothing as security.

"Our drill will only focus on how to prepare when a fire breaks out. When people hear of a drill they think we will deal on security matters. Security will be exuded at this time due to various reasons,” said Okumu.

Okumu added that the drill which will be conducted on a non-specified date will meet all the international set standards for conducting a drill.

“In regards to standards, we have considered everything. This is a big facility any activity being carried out should conform to internationally recognized standards,” said Okumu.

Okumu added that the drill will not go sour compared to the one recently witnessed at Strathmore University in Nairobi last year where a life was lost and some people sustained injuries.
