Residents of Kisumu Ndogo in Kibera have been cautioned against eating too much red meat to prevent cancer.

Area village elder Maureen Agola instead advised residents to embrace white meat and other healthy foods.

“The World Health Organization said frequent consumption of red meat is linked to cancer. I do not want to lose my people to the disease and related sicknesses. As their leader, I have to caution them,’ she said.

Her warning comes days after the WHO released a report indicating that red meat is one of the leading causes of cancer.

“Sausages and smokies are the most consumed since I see them almost everywhere in Kibera. Nyama choma too is eaten in high quantities and this is subjecting people to cancer without them knowing,” added Agola.

She urged residents to reduce the intake of red meat as well as keep off junk food.

“We are fond of taking chips for lunch and meat for supper. This is a very easy way of getting lifestyle diseases,” she said.

She also urged parents to be careful on what they feed their children.
