Kisumu residents have been urged to make use of the Quick Response Team mobile numbers in case of emergencies.
Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany said residents should reach QRT on mobile phone numbers 0720 119993 and 0720 115757.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday at his office, he noted that most of the residents were not using the number to help fight crime.
The QRT consists of a 36-member squad and two 24-hour emergency telephone numbers.
Keitany said residents need to call police on the numbers when they are attacked by thugs for immediate response.
“We have had incidences where locals are attacked yet they fail to alert the team through the mobile numbers,” Keitany said.
He said the locals have welcomed the launch of the QRT to help police fight crime in the area but alot still needs to be done by the locals.
The 36-QRT officers will help fight terrorism, carjacking and cattle rustling among other crimes in the county.
Keitany said the QRT officers are trained in bomb detection and have eight snipers.
Kisumu City Residents Voice chairman Audi Ogada lauded Keitany who is also the county AP commander for the initiative.
Speaking in Kisumu town, he urged residents to make use of the numbers in case of emergency.
He said the commander of the QRT Karanja Muiruri and Inspector Augustine Kamaria have done a commendable job in improving security in the past two months since the initiative was launched.
Ogada said more police patrols should be intensified in hotspot areas such as Nyalenda, Migosi, Manyatta, Obunga, Mamboleo and Nyawita.
“With the team in place we do hope that insecurity that has been a concern in Kisumu and its environs will be a thing of the past,” he said.
Ogada said they will circulate the numbers in all public places within Kisumu town and its environs for the public to access.
