Traders in Kisumu have expressed the challenges they are undergoing this January. According to various traders who spoke to this Hivisasa writer, sales have hit an all time low as they are receiving few customers.
The traders say that the number of customers has reduced by more than a half compared to the previous month, December. The most affected traders are those selling clothes, shoes and electronics.
“It is really tough for me considering the fact that my customers have reduced by a half; all those that come to check the clothes sometimes never buy anything," said Priscah Keino, a trade in the area.
“In December, i used to make a profit of close to Kshs. 5, 000 but now getting to Kshs. 1, 000 is a challenge. People are no longer buying electronics," said Joseph Omolo, another trader.
The traders said that they are finding it hard to pay bills such as electricity and water because they depend on their business as their main sources of income.
However, second-hand book sellers had a different story to tell.
“The sell of books is at its peak and we are making profits like never before," said Gregory smith, a second-hand book seller.
