Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s proposal to have members of clergy deployed to different schools vetted has received massive support from key Knut officials from Masaba branch.
Dr Matiang’i called for vetting of all clergy administering schools as a way of enhancing of good morals among school going children.
The officials led by Deputy Secretary General James Oteki Thursday welcomed the move and urged school heads to implement the directive.
“We normally have members of clergy normally retained on permanent basis as pastors or chaplains in our schools. They must be people of high integrity and I think the CS was right. All these people should be vetted so that we ensure only those with good morals and high integrity is trusted to take care of our children,” he said during election of incoming officials at Rigoma.
Mr Oteki urged area school heads to consider recruiting afresh those interested in ministering to their respective institutions and a way of increasing confidence among students and parents.
“We often hear controversial issues regarding some of those people (clergy). It’s now a challenge to our school heads to consider recruiting afresh so that we improve confidence among students and parents. We want people with unquestionable morals,” he said.
Deputy Treasurer Alex Mouko called for recruitment of pastors and chaplains with teaching profession backgrounds.
“Vetting alone may not really help. I am of the opinion that we consider hiring teachers with a strong spiritual background so that they take charge of spiritual matters in our schools. The CS was right and I hope school heads will support his directive,” he said.
