Leaders from the Western part of the country have been urged to work with IEBC to ensure the voter registration exercise scheduled for this month succeeds.

Western region coordinator Mrs Sarah Ogaro, who paid Kisii County deputy governor Joash Maangi a courtesy call on Thursday, said the input of politicians in sensitising eligible citizens in registration was welcome.

She urged them to spread the message to all electoral units but warned against trafficking of people to register for their own benefit.

“I would like to challenge our leaders to work together with IEBC so that we register as many voters as we can. Politicians are better positioned to make the message sink among Kenyans who need to be registered than just publicity exercises done by us. However, they must do that without violating any elections act,” she said.

She also urged youth groups from the region to embark in the process of sensitising their peers to register as voters and defended the move by IEBC to appoint only two voter registration assistants per ward.

“I also know we have many leaders who are in charge of youth groups. They too can help IEBC reach its targets by encouraging their peers to register as voters. The registration body is working with limited resources but that doesn’t mean we don’t register a good number of voters” she said.

Maangi on his part promised support from the county government in terms of mobility of registration officials.

“As leaders we have a role to help IEBC reach its targets and we are ready to do that. As a county, we will do our best to ensure registration officials reach every part of the ward and we will ensure that we improvise means of transport to make the exercise successful,” he said.
