There was less noise in Kisumu streets to usher in the new year following a ban on fireworks by the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.
Fireworks, which are mostly loved by the Asian community, usually light up the skies, but this was not the case on Friday night as residents heeded to the IG's directive.
The order was directed towards individuals, hoteliers and other establishments that planned to set off fireworks as part of the celebrations.
He said the directive was as a result of elevated threat of terrorism and therefore security officers need to know when and where to expect celebratory fireworks.
“I love fireworks especially in the dead of night, but this time we just had to do without them so that we do not have problems with the authorities,” said Jamal Khan who lives in Milimani estate.
This, however, did not deter partygoers from flocking social joints to make merry as they usher in 2016.
The illuminated streets of Kisumu, coupled with police patrols, ensured that less activities in relations to crime, affected the good moment.
