Residents of Mamboleo estate living along Kisumu-Kakamega Road which is under construction are living in constant agony as a result of the unbearable dust blowing from the road.
The residents on Tuesday also complained of reckless driving of construction trucks that occasionally plunge into the nearby houses.
They said they have to keep running to hospital for airborne diseases caused by the dust and asked the construction company to frequently sprinkle water on the road.
Martha Oyier said close to four houses in the area have been knocked down including hers by the trucks.
Oyier said she has not been compensated for the destruction of her property and called for intervention to get assistance.
“The Chinese Firm constructing the road has refused to pay me. Lately they referred me to an insurance firm attached to them but I was told there is no money,” she said.
She said one person had been killed in the area and feared that more destruction of property and loss of lives will increase if no action is taken.
The locals spoke as another truck plunged into another house bringing it down. Luckily, the owner of the house, a widow was away and no casualty was reported.
A neighbour Caren Achieng said the widow had just taken loan to build the house that has now been destroyed.
Achieng appealed for help to the widow who has four children and now homeless.
“We need help, we need somebody who can talk on our behalf and have this construction company compelled to pay for these damages,” she said.
Efforts to seek clarification from the firm’s managers failed after they declined to comment on the matter.
