The on-going voter registration exercise that is being conducted by Independent electoral and boundary commission, IEBC is expected to end on March 15, 2016.
Despite the efforts being made by the IEBC and the media to urge as many people as possible to register, the turn out is very low not only in Machakos county but also in other counties.
Why are people not turning out in large numbers to register as voters? A popular saying goes, 'Lie to me once, you are a fool. Lie to me twice, I am a fool.'
There is a limit to which a man can endure. In 2007, voters trusted the electoral commission but after it made a biased ruling that set the country on fire, voters started questioning the credibility of the electoral system.
Voters did not give up, in 2012, they again put their trust on the IEBC but the commission once again disappointed them.
How do we expect the voters to register in large numbers while they do not even trust the IEBC. It is obvious, the low turn out is because of lack of credibility in the IEBC.
