Students from Lukenya Girls Centre of Excellence has urged Machakos County Government to repair roads leading to their school.

Addressing the press in the school's compound on Thursday, students of the school based in Athi River Sub County said roads leading to the school were in pathetic condition hence urgent need for the government's intervention.

"We are urging the leadership of County Government of Machakos to consider repairing roads leading to Lukenya Girls Centre of Excellence to ease access to the institution," said Kerubo.

Mercy Kerubo, a form four student said poor states of roads had made it too expensive to get to the school thereby posing great financial burden to parents and guardians.

Kerubo said the main road linking the school from the Nairobi - Mombasa Highway at the Athi River town's Devki was pathetic.

"The main road to the school from Mombasa Road is in a sorry state, there is no season within the year when students enjoy using it. We suffer both during rain or dry spell seasons," said Kerubo.

According to Kerubo, the state of the road had made it expensive for the students to get to school due to hiked transport charges.

She said there was no reliable means of transport on the road apart from boda boda operators who have no specific charges for their services and take advantage of the situation to extort them, they charge between Sh200 to Sh400 in a single way.

Joan Kimani, a form two student from the school said it was not easy for the students to get emergency services whenever they need them because of the poor roads.

"Lukenya Girls Centre of Excellence is located in a remote area, very interior from any town between Mombasa and Kangundo Roads, not even an ambulance is able to urgently get to the school incase of an emergency due to poor state of the roads," said Kimani.

The students spoke shortly after a joint Kiswahili and Journalism Clubs mentorship meeting.
