The members of parliament have now been called upon to use the parliamentary process to increase the funding to the counties to empower more development at the county levels.

According to Kisii county deputy governor Joash Maangi there was a need for the MPs to ensure that the county governments receives more money in the next financial year.

“The referendum will cost us a lot of time and money," said Maangi.

"I prefer that a member of parliament moves a motion to amend the constitution to pave the way for increased funding to the counties,” said Maangi.

He cautioned the rival camps in the plebiscite against the use of abusive language in their campaign to gain support from the electorate.

The politician noted that there is no need to cause tension and animosity amongst the electorate but the campaigns have to be issue-based and peaceful.

He stated that he is both for and against the clamour for up scaling monies allocated to the counties.

“I on one hand support the drive because county governments need more money to initiate development projects that can benefit the people," said Maangi.

"But the monies should be spent accountably,” he said.

Maangi, who spoke at a funeral ceremony in Kisii central ward in Nyaribari Chache, yesterday said he was opposed to the clamour for a referendum because some county governments have mismanaged the funds they received in the last financial year.
