Farmers in Machakos County have been advised to deworm their cattle during this rainy season in a bid to prevent an outbreak of internal pests and parasites.

Speaking during an agricultural seminar in Machakos Town on Tuesday, Dr David Waweru, said the parasites lay their eggs in the soil and pasture during the sunny and dry seasons, and the eggs hatch during the rainy season.

"The fresh green pastures which grow during the rainy season are exposed to internal animal parasites, and they get in to the animals' bodies while they graze. That explains the watery stool cattle get after feeding on the green, fresh pastures that grow during the rainy season," said Dr Waweru.

The doctor urged farmers to deworm their cattle so as to avoid the effects caused by the parasites such as low animal products yields.

Dr Waweru also advised the farmers to spray the animals with pesticides to avoid external pest attacks as some of the external pests also come with the rainy season.

He however asked farmers to be careful when administering the pesticides as some of them are poisonous.
