Tanzania's President John Pombe Magufuli has again made headlines in Kenya after effecting a ban on miniskirts in his country.
According to the Standard newspaper, the directive issued by his government, women now have three weeks to get rid of the miniskirts and any other outfit that reveals their legs or show off their bodies suggestively.
The ban on miniskirts and skimpy clothes according to Magufuli, is meant to reduce the spread of HIV/Aids.
This directive has now led Tanzanians and Kenyans alike to pour out their sentiments on social media, with some congratulating him whereas others have termed the directive as a media gimmick.
‘I can tell you for free, that this is a media gimmick. Nothing of the sort is going on here. Only an insinuation levelled at one of the new ministers, but he has since renounced the outrageous ban. Standard media we know them... always never getting facts right first,’ said one Peter Kamara , one of those who reacted to the news.
However, others could not take the directive seriously and instead, they chose to make a joke out of it.
"Magufulication is taking new turn, a pretty extreme one it seems. From the verb " Magufulify", I thought Magufuli would allow miniskirts because it will save cloth. The shorter, the lesser cotton and cheaper it is lol,’ stated one Nicknora Nyol Jr via facebook.
‘ At this rate he is going to ban pple from walking,’ added Wanjiku Chege
Some of the those who joined the conversation went ahead to state that the ban will not help to curb the disease and instead, they asked the President to focus on other issues affecting the country.
‘ This is when HE Pombe begins to lose focus, the problems of Africa and TZ especially in corruption which has undermined provision of services and not mini skirts. Women have the liberty to choose how they dress, the issues of Aids spread is a choice. Let any one convince me that mini skirts can cause Aids,’ added Patrick Akiiki.
