A young man was on Wednesday fined Sh 5000 by a Nakuru court for stealing potatoes from his employer’s garden.

Chief Magistrate Doreen Mulekyo fined Geoffrey Wafula after he pleaded guilty to uprooting and stealing two buckets of potaoes from his employer's garden.

According to the prosecution, Wafula was seen by members of the public uprooting potatoes from the garden, they raised alarm and started chasing him.

The police was called and he was arrested and taken to Kaptembwa police station.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and told the court to forgive him.

“I was working for her and she has not paid me since November, I also have a family to take care of so I decided to go to her garden and uproot the potatoes  and eat with my family,” he said.

He also acknowledge the fact that he tried the wrong way of trying to get his money back instead of using the law.

State Prosecutor Sandra Kosgei urged the court to treat Wafula as first offender since the prosecution has no previous records.

The court fined Wafula Sh 5000 or risk a jail term of a month.
