Residents of Mokomoni sub location in Kiabonyoru ward blocked Mokomoni-Kebirigo road on Monday morning to protest incidents of suicide in the region apparently occasioned by domestic violence.

This comes after Mr Eliud Mwancha's body was recovered Monday morning outside his house after allegedly quarreling with his wife over domestic issues.

According to a neighbour, the father of two chased away his wife who had questioned his habit of drinking too much (illicit brew) before he committed the crime.

“They had a quarrel which was a bit normal for us. The wife, Elizabeth Nyaboke, took off to unknown destination and we only found the man hanging on a rope following a notification from his eight-year-old boy who was crying,” said Peter Masese.

A group of area residents led by Mr Emmanuel Mouko urged the government to intervene and execute random guidance and counseling to help combat the menace.

“This is the sixth incident in a period of less than four months. We are appealing to the government to consider initiating guidance and counseling programs for couples who are persistently embroiled in domestic issues which are apparently behind the suicide cases we have been witnessing,” he said.

Area Assistant Chief Mrs Agnes Osebe condemned the incident and urged couples to learn to solve their issues without taking their lives.

“I can confirm that we lost one of us on Sunday night. It’s not the first time and most of these cases are basically domestic issues between couples. It’s high time we learned to solve issues by following the right channel. Committing suicide will never be a solution. The provincial administration is always ready to assist in acting as mediators in family domestic issues,” she said.
