Joseph Kinyua, a 52 year old man from Bahati consistuency in Nakuru county escaped death row after serving imprisonment for 27 years. He left his wife Josephine with one baby who was two years at the moment. His wife also had a three month pregnancy.

Josephine wanjiru; Kinyua’s wife confessed that she waited for her husband’s return due to her love for him. Kinyua’s wife was only 21 years old at the time of her husband’s conviction and now 27 years have already passed.

Kinyua said that he was sentenced to death for robbery with violence. He however maintained his innocence stand and is said to have had conducted a traditional wedding before his arrest.

His wedding ceremony originated from kikuyu tradition entailing negotiating and paying bride’s dowry as well as receiving blessings from the parents of both sides which is the requirement for the traditional marriage.

Mr. Kinyua was released on December 2015 following a presidential pardon after serving at Kamiti Maximum Prison. He found his family had grown bigger since his sons had matured and even borne him grandchildren.
