An ever-green piece of land with flourishing kales is the kind of visual appeal you get once you set your feet inside Ray Okelo’s farm.

A visit to his farm will make you fill as if you have just entered a different climatic zone.

Mr Ray is a farmer in Maseno who has embraced the irrigation method of farming which can be said to be doing remarkably excellent in his farm.

A visit by this writer in his farm on Thursday has revealed that crops can actually be grown during the dry season when proper mechanisms are put in place.

Ray uses water from his well to irrigate his crops every day.

He said that he uses electric pump to pump water from the well to a tank and then from there he uses a horse pipe to sprinkle water on his vegetables and nappier grass.

He said that he does this every morning and evening to ensure that his crops remain green and healthy.

He confirmed that the farm supplied his family with vegetables and he is also able to make daily sales to business women who go to sell them at Maseno market.

He however mentioned that he is still soliciting funds so that he may buy more advanced farm machinery and also invest in greenhouses.

“I want to fully commercialize my agricultural venture,” he said.

According to Joel Andai, an Agricultural officer in Maseno, methods such as bottling can be used by farmers during such dry seasons for farming.

Speaking to him, he said that the method involved putting punctured bottle containing water at the stem of every plant so that the plant is supplied with moisture.

The agricultural officer called for more farmers to embrace irrigation to grow crops during dry periods.

“This will alleviate your living standards,” he said.
