Residents of Maseno have been warned against misuse of mosquito nets to curb malaria infections.
This comes amid reports of increased number of malaria cases since the start of this week in the area.
According to Siriba Dispensary statistics, most of those infected are children aged below 7 years.
Alice Ateka, a clinical officer at the dispensary Wednesday said that the increased cases of malaria infections can be attributed to the immense misuse of mosquito nets among the residents.
She said that most of the residents have abandoned sleeping under mosquito nets, and are now using the nets to construct chicken enclosures and to create fences around their vegetable farms.
“Kenyans must assist the government in its efforts of eradicating malaria,” she said.
She however advised the residents to clear bushy places around their homesteads and also to drain flooded areas that have come into existence during the rainy season as they provide a perfect breeding environment for the deadly mosquitoes.
“Mosquito nets must be put to their appropriate use, this will reduce malaria infections that have proved to be fatal especially among children,” she said.
