Students in Maseno University were on Thursday educated on the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
The Anti-Drug campaign held at the University’s Graduation Square aimed at countering the effects and influence of drugs among university students.
It is alleged that most students are into drug abuse especially the first years who are swayed by the lavish life they find other students leading in campus.
Speaking at the event, Opande Kweya, the Dean of Students Affairs said the number of college students getting lured into drug and substance abuse is on the rise and therefore calls for intervention.
He said smoking of bhang and drinking of alcohol has become common among students and this has contributed to poor academic performance.
“You should be wise in choosing your friends, some can lead you into alcoholism," he said.
Risper Ocholla, a counselor, emphasised the Anti-Drugs message by saying that it was necessary for everyone to avoid drug abuse and alcohol like a plague.
She said that handling drug addiction is a difficult process.
“For one to heal, expensive medication and rehabilitation is needed,” she said.
At the end of the event, an information desk was set where students could seek clarification on drug issues from trained counselors.
Peer educators were also available to handle personal drug issues that required confidentiality.
