Buses and matatu operators using the routes to the remote parts of Gatundu North have raised fares making it difficult for students going back to school.
According to Martin Njihia, a matatu driver in Kamwangi town, fares have been hiked to Kshs. 100.
The students have not been spared by the boda boda operators either as they have also hiked their charges to between Kshs. 100 and Kshs. 150 up from the previous charges.
Dorcus Waithera, a Karinga Girl’s Secondary School student alleged that she was forced to pay Kshs. 100 as opposed to the Kshs. 70 that she usually pays.
"Matatu operators who have been charging us Kshs. 70 from Kamwangi to Mataara have now increased the fare to Kshs. 100. This is so unfair to us students," she lamented.
Some students interviewed from Kamwangi bus stage said they have been forced to request for more pocket money from their parents to travel to their respective schools.
"I have been forced to request for an additional Kshs. 200 from my mum who works here in town. The fare hiking is alarming. I think the operators should consider the fact that we are students," said Mathew Njagi, a Kirwara Boys Secondary School student.
