Residents of Mtwapa have raised an concern over what they termed unnecessary increases in travel fares.
A section of the residents who spoke to this reporter said they are now forced to walk to work as they cannot afford to use vehicles.
They said despite the end of the festive season, matatus in the Coastal town still overcharge commuters.
They further accused the matatu operators for arbitrarily fixing fares which they say is now hurting them both socially and economically and are now appealing to the relevant authorities to get them out of the situation.
As this reporter spoke to the the visibly unhappy residents on Wednesday, they said their plight has now reached beyond them and that the only relevant bodies can help solve the menace.
They said they have part with Sh70 in order to reach town.
The residents claim they usually paid Sh50 in the past few weeks for the same distance.
Anthony Epale, a resident said the new figure charged by Mtwapa Sacco vehicles was too high.
"Where do these people expect this money to come from," he questioned.
He now urges the relevant authorities to intervene.
Another resident, Dennis Ekisa claimed that the matatu owners had rejected to lower the bus fares even after hearing pleas fro locals.
However, one of the Sacco officials who spoke to this writer claimed that the decision to increase the fare was communicated to the commuters and that they are insincere in their complains.
"We informed them of our decision," said Habib Hassan, denying all the allegations leveled against the Sacco.
