Residents of Matongo village in Kitutu Masaba constituency have challenged the police in the area to increase patrols in the region in order to curb rising incidents of insecurity.

Led by the former Gesima councillor Mr. Nyabuti Mamboleo on Wednesday, the residents blamed the police for their slow response to numerous incidents of insecurity in the past one month.

According to them, a suspected organised criminal gang has been executing robbery with violence in the region leading to the loss of property and thousands of shillings.

“This is becoming too much and we are wondering why the police are taking long to respond. Robbery incidents are becoming a norm in our village and nothing has been done by the authorities to restore security in this region,” Mamboleo said.

They also urged the county government of Nyamira to install street lights in the nearby Matongo trading center as a measure of improving security in the region.

“The gang is merciless and victims have testified that they are heavily armed. Matongo trading center should be lit by the county government these incidents can be minimised. It is even becoming unsafe for shopkeepers to keep their shops open during the evening hours,” he added.

They urged the police to conduct investigations and arrest the gang before the situation escalated.

“If we keep quiet on the matter we will soon begin lamenting over people dying. The police should intensify patrols in this region and apprehend those suspects before they spread their robbery attacks to surrounding neighbourhoods,” said Mr. Wilson Nyabati, a resident.
