Gituamba member of county assembly Sammy Ng’anga wants the national government to cede some functions of developing infrastructure for public schools to the counties.

"Development and maintenance of our primary schools still lie with the national government. Most of our schools are in bad state and if we are allowed as a county to intervene, our children would be reading from places that are neatly kept," he observed.

Currently, the county governments are only mandated to develop infrastructure for the ECDs.

"The average enrolment into ECD is 17,000 children per year in our county. This is as a result of parent’s sensitization to educate their children to erase illiteracy. I will also help increase this number in my ward by coming up with a feeding program that will help our children read more," he said.

He revealed that the county is targeting to construct 7 more ECDs across the county adding that 70 percent of the ECDs which are complete.

With regard to tertiary education, the legislator said Kiambu County has built two more polytechnics to enable those who may not have a chance in the secondary schools to acquire specialized skills needed in the development of the county.

"We have renovated Mangu, built a polytechnic in Gakoe and Kariri, all efforts which are geared towards allowing all students despite their failure in exams access education," he said from his Gituamba office on Tuesday morning.
