Nominated Member of County Assembly in Nakuru Esther Njeri Mengere has called for laws that will protect men who are battered by their wives.

Mengere said majority of the men feel intimidated by the actions and yet they are also victims of domestic abuse.

“The current law mainly focuses on women which has often caused the men to be ignored or even left alone on issues relating to battering. There also needs to be a clear act to ensure that the men who are tortured get justice,” she added.

Her views comes a day after men from Molo called on non-governmental organisations in the country to protect men who are battered.

The men, who were speaking to the press on Sunday, argued that there have been increased cases of men who are severely battered and beaten up by their wives but no one has come to help them.

“Since December, there are over 23 men who have been beaten and many have been injured especially in their private parts. They have also sustained serious injuries from machete cuts and poured hot water on,” said Peter Muchai.

Muchai, who is also a victim of the wife battering, pointed out that no organisation had come to offer him help.

“I was beaten by my wife after we fought in December and she hit me with a panga, hurting my ear,” he added.

James Mureithi, a victim, also said they are also ashamed to report cases of battering to the police.

“In fact, the policemen often dismiss us and end up laughing at us which makes us hard to even fill a P3 form,” he added.
