Nominated MCA Esther Mengere has launched a campaign in Naivasha and its environs to seek children who have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

Speaking to the press in Naivasha on Sunday, Mengere said that they would put stiff measures in place to ensure that no one undergoes the cut.

“We have often received reports from Ngodi, Maela and Mai Mahiu and we intend to use the teachers in the schools to help us track the victims. The children will be more open to them than to us,” she said.

Mengere added that they were also targeting parents of the children who force their children to undergo the cut.

She also wants parents of children who allow FGM jailed for not less than 15 years, saying that they were interfering with efforts to fight the vice.

“The only way we can be able to ensure that this practice is curbed is by having no mercy at any perpetrator but unfortunately that is not the case,” she added.

She accused the courts of letting some of the perpetrators walk free due to their old age.

“Most of the women are taking advantage of their age to ensure that they get away with the practice which is illegal and banned in Kenya," she said.
