A Nyamira MCA has dismissed reports that he applied for Sh1 million overdraft from the county government treasury to pay rent.
This comes a day after Gesima MCA Ken Atuti’s name was adversely mentioned by Dr Bonny Khalwale led committee on Public Accounts and Investment Committee that was grilling county boss John Nyagarama on Wednesday over spending of Sh2.8 million on purchasing of milk, sugar and soft drinks.
Speaking on Thursday at his Gesima base, Atuti rubbished the accusations and urged the Senate committee to direct the matter in contention to the assembly’s leadership.
“It’s quite absurd that my name could be mentioned that I was solely involved in writing a Sh1 million imprest for payment of my rent. That report is erroneous because it was a request by at least 20 MCAs and we have since paid the loan. It’s therefore a non-issue at the moment,” he said.
According to him, the amount was deducted by the county leadership and it was therefore an administrative matter that the treasury and assembly leadership should have explained rather than dragging his name.
“It’s unfortunate that the Senate did shoddy investigations. Personally, I cleared what I had been given and I think it’s a matter of recording keeping that treasury should explain. Therefore, the order by the Senate committee that the county recovers the money in question from us is null and void,” he added.
He blamed the Senate of witch hunt by allegedly failing to carry out proper investigations to ascertain crucial matters.
“This means that the committee of accounts is after some of us. That is evident from shoddy investigations and its time they do their oversight properly,” he added.
Dr Khalwale had directed Nyagarama to facilitate recovery of the money in question from the MCAs and authorised stiff action on people involved in inflating prices of basic commodities like sugar that was being purchased at Sh300 instead of Sh120 per kilogram.
