Nyansiongo trading center residents have received a backing from area MCA over the controversy surrounding ownership of a piece of land that hosted a section of traders for years following an acquisition by a private developer.

According to Mrs Gladys Mogire, the piece of land belongs to Nyaera Women Group and was leased to a section of Nyansiongo traders waiting to be developed only to be hijacked by a private developer.

However, the traders and women group’s pleas attracted the attention of the area MCA Jackson Mogusu on Friday who promised to table the issue at the County Assembly of Nyamira for discussion.

“I am shocked to see someone trying to develop an area that rightfully belongs to hard working people. I have seen documents and I have no doubt that the land belongs to a certain women group and it was leased to some traders. I am taking the matter to the assembly for discussion because we do not condone land grabbing,” he said.

Mogusu said he was also ready to fight for justice in the court in case the developer opted to use the court to solve the land row that has sparked protests in the center for a week now.

“The tension here is worsening. We are giving the developer a week to vacate or take him to court. It’s wrong to rob the poor and the underprivileged. I am as well ready for a court tussle,” he said.

Mogire, who chairs the group called for calm but urged the developer to be open on the issue and face them.

“He has been running away and most of the construction is done at night. However, we will remain calm until the issue is resolved. We will not bring structures down as resolved earlier,” she said.
