Mua MCA Oliver Nzeki on Tuesday proposed a motion seeking to establish an independent agency to collect revenue on behalf of the Machakos County government.

Nzeki, who is also the County Treasury and Revenue Collection CeC, said that revenue collection should not be done by county government employees, in a bid to reduce the chances of revenue falling into the hands of corrupt officials.

Several members of the county assembly supported Nzeki saying that many departments have been marred by corruption which is mostly associated with government officials, arguing that an independent service provider would do a better job.

Tala Ward MCA, Alex Kamitu, said the county was capable of collecting up to Sh5 billion from taxes charged on business operations.

"If tax collection was being conducted by a corruption free agency, Machakos County would be collecting a lot of revenue because Machakos people pay their taxes accordingly but the money ends up in the pockets of corrupt individuals," said Kamitu.
