When you meet John Obare at work mending shoes, you are likely to mistake him for a guy with hardly any education.
Obare who pursues a Bachelor of Business Management mends shoes after classes in order to raise tuition fee.
“I come from a humble background which gives me no option but hustles hard to raise my own money. Some people think the business as dirty but I say no business is dirty as long as it yields money,” he said.
He stations outside his workplace outside his room and he find favor with the students.
“I make at least Sh 300 daily. I also do brush students' shoes although it varies with when there are events in the school paying the most up to Sh 600,” he said.
He learnt the skills from his grandparents who he says he grew up with.
“I grew up with my grandfather who was a shoe shiner and cobbler. The business sustained us. I would sometimes help him which got me exposed to these skills,” Obare said.
