Residents of Mereroni area in Lanet ward have called on the county government to help them fix a burst sewer in the area saying that it is a health hazard.
According to the residents, their children are the most affected because the sewage has spilt over to the roads which also serves as their playing ground.
“We want the relevant authorities to help rectify this sewage because we are worried about the possible health risks related to the situation,” noted Moses Lutuba, a resident from the area.
He added that what irritates them most is the fact that the sewage has been overflowing for the better part of last week and any attempts to report to the Nakuru Water and Sewage Service Company have not yielded results.
“Why are they treating us like second options while we are also taxpayers who have a right to quality services, why are they ignoring us?” he lamented.
Anne Shiro who operates a cereals shop at the Mereroni shopping center on the same note said that it was sad that a sewage line can burst and overflow for a whole week in a residential area without being rectified by the relevant authorities.
“This is the highest form of irresponsibility and ignorance from our service providers because this is a very risky situation with regards to health especially to our young children,” she said.
Shiro further said that the on-going rains have made the situation worse because the sewage can mix with drinking water leading to an outbreak of water borne diseases.
They have threatened to stage a peaceful demonstration if the situation will not have been reverted by the end of this week to express their displeasure in the way NAWASSCO was delivering their services to them.
