The decision by the Ministry of Education to absorb all student from private schools who scored 400 marks and above in 2015 KCPE exams to national schools has been backed by Gusii Private School’s association chair.
Education CS Dr Fred Matiang’i, who is also scheduled to visit the larger Gusii region from Monday next week, said during the unveiling of the selection process that all candidates from private schools who scored 400marks would be admitted to national schools.
Speaking at his offices on Thursday at Set Green Academy, Charles Mochama termed the decision ‘heroic’ and said it would neutralise discrimination that had been practised by government previously.
“I want to that the CS for such heroic decision. This is the beginning of ending the discrimination by the government in our private schools. This is indeed allowing fair competition to students because they are taught by teachers who must have gone through similar colleges,” he said.
Mr Mochama urged the ministry to amend the education act that favours students from public schools in admission to schools so that the decision is protected by law.
“As much as I appreciate our CS, the decision he made was oral. He has to mobilise education stakeholders to amend the controversial clause that has seen our public counterparts get a lot of spaces in admission to national schools,” he added.
He also hailed the ministry for making the selection exercise online saying it would reduce drastically the time taken to give feedback to all candidates who are expecting admission apart from reducing corruption.
