Mlolongo MCA Rachel Nduku has discouraged settlement along rivers claiming that this obstructs rain water from entering the rivers and instead leads to flooding.
Speaking to this writer outside her office on Wednesday, just a day after heavy floods swept houses and reportedly led to the death of a 26-year-old woman in Kicheko village in Mlolongo ward, Nduku expressed her opposition to cultivation along the river banks.
"I am warning those who purchase land for cultivation along the river banks to stop it and I also urge those who have established settlements along the rivers to vacate immediately to avoid risking their lives," said Nduku.
She also warned people who live in the rental houses along the same areas to vacate too.
Nduku also called upon officers from National Construction Authorities to inspect the buildings built in such areas to ensure that they could withstand the prevailing heavy rains.
She also asked them not to approve any further construction of rental houses along the rivers.
